Fellowship Square is celebrating it’s 55th Anniversary. Founded by a Lutheran minister, Dr. John Scherzer.who was aware of the many widows who were struggling with poverty and the loss of housing after their spouse died. He formed a partnership with Housing Urban Development (HUD) to provide mortgages for land and building apartments and subsidies for those who would qualify. Robert E. Simon was at the same time forming the first planned community in the US and was aware of the need for low income housing for the aged and disabled. Together they worked to make sure that the Reston Plan there would be housing for elders in need. Lake Anne was the first building to be built. It was constructed in two sections. Lake Anne I with 140 apartments opened in 1970 and Lake Anne II opened in 1976, adding 100 units, common areas and a social hall. Hunters Wood Fellowship House was the second House Fellowship Square built completing it in 1979.
Expanding beyond Fairfax County Lake Ridge Fellowship House was built in 1983 and was the first building built in Prince William County by Fellowship Square.
